There’s extra to it than simply the bars, in fact; the video, from creator Kyoko Takenaka, is an exploration of loads of points of Asian-American id, significantly for girls. I simply watched the bar scene first, through Instagram, through which Takenaka secretly information the issues she’s overheard folks saying in bars.
These are real-life audio recordings from males who got here as much as me in bars. I made this movie, HOME, encapsulating over 7 years of recorded micro-aggressions. It is a visible + sonic collage of my experiences rising up in America as an Asian-american femme.
As I sat there in disbelief each time digesting the audacity of those males, recording and archiving allowed me the area and chi to know that in the future, my anger and trauma can be used for one thing; it could not swallow or eat me complete then or now.
