Blacklisted by U.S., Xiaomi says it's not a 'Communist Chinese military company'

With mere days left in workplace, the Trump administration has added one other Chinese language smartphone maker to its listing of blacklisted corporations.

On Thursday, the U.S. Division of Protection added Xiaomi to the listing of “Communist Chinese language army corporations working straight or not directly in america.”

“The Division is decided to spotlight and counter the Folks’s Republic of China’s (PRC) Navy-Civil Fusion improvement technique, which helps the modernization targets of the Folks’s Liberation Military (PLA) by guaranteeing its entry to superior applied sciences and experience acquired and developed by even these PRC corporations, universities, and analysis applications that look like civilian entities,” the assertion from the DoD reads.

Xiaomi has thus joined Huawei and quite a few different Chinese language corporations, largely from the aviation, nuclear power, infrastructure, and semiconductor sectors, on this listing. U.S. corporations are prohibited from investing in corporations on the listing, and those that are invested must divest their holdings in these corporations by Nov. 11, 2021.

In a statement posted on its web site, Xiaomi stated it’s “not owned, managed or affiliated with the Chinese language army, and isn’t a “Communist Chinese language Navy Firm” as outlined beneath the NDAA.

“The Firm has been in compliance with regulation and working in compliance with the related legal guidelines and rules of jurisdictions the place it conducts its companies. The Firm reiterates that it gives services for civilian and business use,” the assertion reads.

It is price noting that this doesn’t suggest U.S. corporations are prohibited from doing enterprise with Xiaomi, as they’re within the case of Huawei. In addition to being on this listing, Huawei can also be on the U.S. “Entity Checklist,” which imposes a much more restrictive algorithm on listed corporations.

Xiaomi is a consumer-oriented firm and doesn’t produce telecommunications gear like Huawei, however being singled out as a possible menace within the U.S. certainly would not do the corporate any favors. With Trump on his means out and Joe Biden taking on on Jan. 20, Xiaomi can hope that the brand new administration will revert the choice.
